Lavender oil is probably the best known of all the essential oils. It seems no medicine kit is complete without a bottle of Lavender. This is most likely due to the number of conditions that Lavender can assist, along with being an oil that is safe to use on children, adults and the elderly alike.

An evergreen, woody shrub, that grows to around a metre in height. Narrow, slender leaves with various shades of purple to blue coloured flowers. An ornamental version is available in whites and pinks flowers, though not suitable for extracting oil. The entire plant is highly aromatic. Lavender was originally endemic to Mediterranean countries and is now grown world-wide. The species of lavender grown is generally Lavandula angustifolia L. syn. officinalis. This grows best at 700-1200m altitude.

Lavender is appreciated for its balancing & calming, and soothing and healing properties, advantageous for relieving tension, stress, irritability, depression, panic and nervous exhaustion, and is effective for headaches, migraines and insomnia. It may also aid and benefit complaints such as bronchitis, asthma, colds, laryngitis, throat infections and whooping cough and helps the digestive system deal with colic, nausea, vomiting and flatulence. Supports female health, Lavender oil relieves pain when used for rheumatism, arthritis, and muscular aches and pains, especially those associated with sport. On the skin, lavender oil tones and revitalizes and it is useful for all types of skin problems such as abscesses, acne, oily skin, boils, burns, sunburn, wounds, psoriasis, lice, insect bites, stings and also acts as an insect repellent. An added advantage as an excellent agent for dry, sensitive or irritated skin, leaving it feeling soft, fresh and clean. Being a gentle and balancing fragrance which has been used for perfumes, cosmetics, soaps and medicines. Along with Lavenders’ purifying, cleansing and detoxifying qualities.
